Experts will debate about competitiveness in Paraguay: the economic future of the country and its challenges

The event will have two days, Wednesday 21 – Thursday 22 of July, starting at 6:00 pm. Experts and referents from the business sector will talk about finances, investment climate and money laundering, human capital and labor inclusion, research, and development for the future; economic reactivation.

 

Fundación Paraguaya makes this event possible with the purpose of building a more competitive Paraguay and placing it in the “Global Competitiveness Index” driven by the World Economic Forum, adding the local voice with the opinions of entrepreneurs, businessmen, and politicians from around the world.

 

Martín Burt, a board member of the Schwab Foundation of the World Economic Forum, explained, “It is essential to reflect and debate about these topics, and especially to participate in the Global Competitiveness Index survey. This survey will allow us to evaluate our economy, enabling comparison studies that will help both companies and countries to make decisions about the policies they implement and to correct them if necessary.”

 

Day 1: Finances and Human Capital

 

On Wednesday, July 21, there will be two panels. The first will be focused on Finances, Investment Climate and Money Laundering, critical aspects to improve the business climate in our country which, in turn, will bring along more significant incentives for national and foreign investment, an increase in the formal sector, the start of new companies and greater competitiveness in business management.

 

The lecturers will be Álvaro Acosta, Director of Investor, Carmen Pereira, General Director of the Financial Analysis Unit from SEPRELAD (Secretariat of Money Laundering Prevention, in Spanish) and, Beltrán Macchi, President of the Banks Association of Paraguay (ASOBAN, for its acronym in Spanish).

 

These experts will discuss the strength of banks, venture capital, auditing standards, and financial reporting. Also, they will discuss how tax measures distort competition, the small and medium-sized companies access to finance for business operations, and how customs barriers limit the competitive ability of imported products in the domestic market.

 

The second panel will be about Human Capital and Labor Inclusion. The lecturers will be Patricia Dos Santos, founder, and director of JOBS; Carla Bacigalupo, Minister of Labor, Employment and Social Security; María José Cabezudo, president of the Fundación Saraki and Pedro Halley, former manager of Economic Benefits from the Instituto de Previsión Social – IPS (Social Welfare Institute).

 

Topics such as equal employment opportunities and leadership, the role of the educational system to satisfy the needs of skills in a competitive economy, also companies and government investment in training and development, improvement and updating of skills, access to services, security, and salary gap among peers, will be discussed during this panel.

 

Day 2: Investigation, development and economic reactivation

On Thursday, July 22, there will be two panels, as well. One dedicated to Investigation and Development amid the COVID-19 sanitary crisis, its corresponding economic impact, and how the organizations’ overview has been modified.

 

And in the second panel, business leaders will discuss the competitiveness post COVID – facing the economic reactivation.
